“The Maslow model presents a means for understanding the needs of the individual and the worker; every present and growing technology allow for new ways to meet these needs; and training makes the worker more secure, can enhance feelings of belongingness and self-esteem, and provides the opportunity for self-actualization.” (Benson & Dundis 2003)
How did the project go? I have had mostly positive feedback following all of the classes. Interestingly one of the comments submitted on a critique had to do with the monitors at the front of the class for presentations. We have two 60" TV screens to present lecture material. In a distance education video teleconferencing class (VTC) one monitor has video of the instructor and the other monitor has the lecture content. Traditionally in non VTC classes we would have the presentation material on both monitors. Comments came back on critiques that this was distracting and difficult for some to focus (physiological needs). We have since altered practice and now only have one monitor on during non-VTC classes.
Were students engaged in the process? My sense is that the students are engaged. I frequently find that when I take break periods, the students will often want to "keep going", but to ensure that I do not neglect to meet basic physiologic needs I keep the break periods.
What worked well? Making sure I attempted to meet all elements of Maslow's hierarchy needs.
