To provide for the student social and belonging needs, I provide a brief time at the start of the class to introduce myself and provide some information about my background experience in nursing and teaching. I then let the students introduce themselves and tell a little bit about what experience they have. When I notice students who isolate themselves from the group by sitting at the back of the class, I’ll encourage them to move closer to the front so “they can see the screen and EKG strips better” and thus subtly and without embarrassing them get them integrated into the group. I have noticed in some classes, students are hesitant to interact, so I work to provide opportunities for them to integrate into group activities. I will periodically ask them to work in teams to analyze EKG strips and then discuss findings with the group. I have found it beneficial to note that when some students are struggling, to ask other students during breaks if they would be willing to offer assistance to fellow classmates (secondarily meeting some of the positive esteem needs for the tutors).
